Maria Osorio Serrano of Colombia broke serve eight times, including three times in the third set, in defeating second-seeded Magda Linette of Poland in the first round of the MUSC Health Women's Open in Charleston, S.C., on Tuesday.
Osorio Serrano, ranked No. 135 in the world, won four straight games to take the third set in winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in a match that took 2 hours, 16 minutes.
Osorio Serrano converted on 73 percent of her break points to only 44 percent for Linette, who is ranked No. 51.
Only two other seeded players were in action Tuesday, the second day of first-round play.
Top-seeded Ons Jabeur of Tunisia needed only 67 minutes to dispatch Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland, 6-4, 6-1, and fourth-seeded Alize Cornet of France was tied in the third set at 4-4 with Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic when Cornet retired.
Among other winners Tuesday was Claire Liu of the U.S., who defeated Storm Sanders of Australia 7-5, 4-6, 6-0.
Another Australian, Astra Sharma, won in straight sets, as did Francesca Di Lorenzo, Alycia Parks and Christina McHale of the U.S., and Danka Kovinic of Montenegro. Another American, Emma Navarro, advanced when Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic retired with a right lower leg injury after losing the first set and trailing 3-2 in the second.
