The Houston Astros and first baseman Yuli Gurriel agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension for the 2021 season, plus a team option for 2022, the club announced Tuesday.
Financial terms were not released. Gurriel was set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
The announcement came hours before Game 1 of the Astros' American League wild-card series in Minnesota against the Twins.
Gurriel, 36, has played five seasons in Houston, posting a .287 batting average with 71 home runs and 301 RBIs. His best season came in 2019, when he hit .298 with career highs in homers (31), RBIs (104) and OPS (.884). This season, he hit only .232.
In 44 postseason games, he's added five homers and 24 RBIs, batting .267.
Gurriel made his major league debut at age 32 in August 2016 after signing with the Astros. Earlier that year, he defected from Cuba with his younger brother, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., after they competed in the Caribbean World Series in the Dominican Republic.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will be making his postseason debut on Tuesday when his Toronto Blue Jays face the Tampa Bay Rays.
