White Sox, Twins hope to play after snow postponements
Sports Xchange - Sunday 15th April, 2018
MINNEAPOLIS -- A spring snowstorm expected to dump as much as eight inches of snow on the Twin Cities forced the Minnesota Twins to call off a second straight game with the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
And there's no guarantee they'll be able to play Sunday, when the series is scheduled to wrap up at Target Field.
Losing two straight games to weather has muddled Minnesota's starting rotation. Friday would have marked the first time the Twins needed a fifth starter this season but manager Paul Molitor opted not to name a starter because of uncertainty over the weather.
Lance Lynn was scheduled to go Saturday with Jake Odorizzi getting the start Sunday.
Should the teams resume their series Sunday, Lynn will get the call. He struck out nine over five scoreless innings his last time out, a 2-0 loss to the Astros on Monday.
"One hundred and five pitches in five innings, it's not good enough," said Lynn "The strikeouts were good but the walks, that's too many and not enough innings."
Lynn is 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA in two starts this season, his first with the Twins who signed him as a free agent late in spring training following a five-year stint with the Cardinals.
"I need to go deeper," Lynn said. "Two starts so far and I haven't been able to go past the fifth. That's disappointing for me."
Reynaldo Lopez and Miguel Gonzalez were scheduled to start Friday and Saturday, respectively, for Chicago. Lopez (0-1, 0.69 ERA) will start Sunday should that contest take place but Gonzalez's next turn is up in the air for now as manager Rick Renteria plans to adjust his rotation prior to opening a three-game series Monday at Oakland.
"It's incredible that we are talking about snow in the middle of April," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Friday. "There's so much baseball left and a lot of people are dealing with it. We'll just keep working through it."
Minnesota has had three games wiped out this season because of weather -- the two against Chicago and a week ago, when the Twins' series finale with the Mariners was called off on account of unseasonable conditions.
No make-up dates have been announced yet for this weekend's games though Chicago returns to the Twins Cities twice this season, June 5-7 and Sept. 28-30 -- the latter window marking the final three days of the regular season.
The team's next scheduled mutual off day comes Thursday, but the Twins will be returning from a two-game series with the Indians in Puerto Rico while the White Sox will be flying back from Oakland.
Both sides are off June 4, ahead of Chicago's next road series with the Twins and they also have mutual days off on June 25, Aug. 20 and Sept. 6.
Lynn is 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA in three starts versus Chicago, last facing them in 2015. White Sox catcher Welington Castillo is 8-for-12 with three solo home runs versus Lynn.
