Cuba coffee production up

Caribbean Herald (IANS) Tuesday 13th March, 2012

Cuba's coffee production rose by 24 percent to 7,100 tonnes in 2011, as compared to the previous year, the official media reported Tuesday.

The harvest was attributed to better organization and greater efficiency, Xinhua quoted the Granma daily as saying.

Cuba registered its worst coffee harvest in history in 2009 with just 5,500 tonnes.

President Raul Castro decided to push for the recovery of the sector and limit coffee imports.

Cuba's coffee production hit a record high of 60,330 tonnes in 1961.
